Minecraft steve minecraft steve3/31/2024 It's quite telling that while a lot of merch makes him lighter, I've not seen any that makes him darker. I guess there's two primary possibilities for why this is consistently happening: either people see Steve as white and reimagine him with somewhat lighter skin, or they see his skin as ambiguous and want him to be unambiguously white. Obviously in a lot of the merch they're re-interpreting the character to some extent because he typically has one tone for his skin on the merchandise rather than a handful of texels, in most cases his skin ends up lighter, sometimes by a bit, sometimes by a lot. I think that much of the merchandise whitewashes Steve (though lighting exaggerates the extent, especially on the box-art for Minecraft and Dungeons). Also just noticed how old this thread is! I do think it's fairly relevant to the 'why' and clearly his race was a topic of discussion before I ever entered it. As far as I'm aware blue eyes are pretty much only found in caucasians, and would be extremely unlikely in a first-generation mixed race person too. I just noticed that Steve has blue eyes which is a major indicator the character was originally intended as white. I doubt artists are making him lighter because they see it as better (amongst white people tanned skin is typically considered desirable), but clearly they do see Steve as white, which may imply some bias on their part.įair haired/red headed people have a massive tendency towards the kind of skin that burns before it tans, and they use lotion to prevent themselves from burning.
